Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday alleged that the people of Bangladesh are now passing through a miserable time as an ‘unelected government has imposed a totalitarian rule on them’, reports UNB news agency.
“The country is now in a deep crisis as democracy has been obliterated and the freedom of speech snatched. The current regime has been in power unethically for a long time,” he said.
The BNP leader further said, “Public life has become miserable as the current unelected government imposed a totalitarian rule on the country.”
Fakhrul came up with the remarks while addressing Jhenidah district unit BNP’s council at Priya Cinema Hall in the district town. The council of the unit was held after nearly seven years.
He voiced concern that the state machinery has also fallen apart due to the misrule of the government. “Standing in front of the High Court, a retired justice said he doesn’t accept the chief justice’s order.”
Fakhrul also said the country’s law and order situation has deteriorated sharply as people are scared of daring police attitude. “But, the chief of the force said they won’t take responsibility of errant policemen. Then where will the oppressed people go for remedies?”
The BNP leader said the government has also snatched people’s voting rights by establishing a one-party rule.
Under the circumstances, he urged people from all walks of life to get united putting aside all conflicts and misunderstandings to restore their lost rights and democracy.
BNP joint secretary general M Shahjahan, chairperson’s adviser AZM Zahid Hossain, central leader Netai Roy Chowdhury and former MP Abdul Wahab, among others, spoke at the programme.
