Britain on Thursday urged the government of Bangladesh and all parties to show restraint and come to terms to end the currently violent confrontation.
In a statement, the British high commissioner to Bangladesh expressed concern and sadness at the loss of lives and injuries due to continued violence in the country.
“I am deeply saddened that within the last month, over 50 people have been killed and many hundreds more horribly injured in acts of violence,” high commissioner Robert W Gibson noted.
He pointed out that many children have had their education badly affected and the economic cost grows daily. “This is having a detrimental effect on the development and stability of the country,” he added.
The diplomat, who returned to Dhaka after a short break, referred to the tragic death of so many in Comilla on Tuesday saying that it is the latest “example of how innocent people are paying the ultimate price for the ongoing situation”.
He expressed condolences to the bereaved families and also called on all parties to refrain from inciting or committing acts of violence and intimidation.
“The UK continues to call on both the Government and all parties to exercise restraint and respect the rule of law, and to come together to break this cycle of violence and disruption,” Gibson said.
