A Manikganj Court has ordered life imprisonment for two men for raping a girl in a moving bus in early 2013.
District and Sessions Judge AKM Mostofa handed down the life sentence to a driver and his helper who had raped a female garment worker.
The two convicted –driver Dipu Miah, 32 and helper Kashem Miah, 26 — were also fined Tk 50,000 each and ordered an additional 3 years rigorous imprisonment if they did not pay up.
On Jan 24, 2013 the girl was raped in a moving bus on the Dhaka-Aricha highway.
This happened during the global furore over a similar gang-rape in a moving bus of a 23-year-old paramedical student in India’s capital New Delhi.
The para-medical student later died in Singapore.
The case details indicate the female garment worker got into the bus around 1:30pm from Nabinagar bus stand to travel to Paturia. She did not get off the bus even after all the passengers had left because she was not aware the bus terminated at Manikganj.
The girl said the driver continued driving, assuring her of taking her to Paturia.
Helper Kashem raped her first and then driver Dipu took his turn.
Then they drove back and dropped the girl off near the Manra bridge at Manikganj Sadar.
Locals called in the police when they found the girl crying beside the road.
After hearing of the rape, local bus workers assaulted Dipu at the Manikganj bus stand and turned him over to police.
Kashem managed to flee from there, but police arrested him later from Ashulia.
Both confessed to the rape in court the next day.
