Prominent BNP leaders gave a miss to the party’s demonstration in Chittagong on Thursday.
The demonstration was organised to protest against the sentencing of its Standing Committee Member Salauddin Quader Chowhdury.
Salauddin’s brother Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury, who is the
President of the district’s north zone, the zone’s General Secretary Aslam Chowdhury, the party’s south zone President Jafrul Islam, and its General Secretary Sarwar Jamal Nizam were conspicuous by their absence.
The central BNP’s Organising Secretary Golam Akbar Khandker, Mir Nasir, and former Whip Wahidul Alam too were absent from the party programme.
The BNP’s city unit, and its north and south zones chapters jointly organised the demonstration.
The city BNP’s Vice President Shamsul Alam presided over the programme while Dr Shahadat Hossain attended it as the Chief Guest.
“Several witnesses (defence) were prevented from appearing in the court. How the residents of Chittagong can accept this verdict,” said Shahadat.
The International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Salauddin to death for killing Hindus, Awami League leaders, activists and supporters, and for running concentration-camp-styled torture cells in Chittagong during the 1971 Liberation War.
Salauddin was a Minister when Jatiya Party was in power after the independence. Later he was made the opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s adviser after he joined the BNP.
He was elected six times as MP from Chittagong, including thrice as BNP candidate.
