Titas-28 starts supplying gas to national grid

A new well at the Titas gas field in Brahmanbaria has started supplying 12-13 million cubic feet (mmcf) of gas a day to the national grid amid an ongoing gas shortage in the country.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit formally inaugurated gas production from the Titas-28 well yesterday.

The well, located at the “C” location of the Titas Gas Field in the Suhilpur area of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila, was drilled under a project to drill four appraisal-cum-development wells at the Titas and Kamta gas fields. Drilling began on December 15 last year and was completed on June 19 this year.

The well was drilled to a measured depth of 3,601 metres. After completion, drill stem testing and production testing were carried out before the well was brought into regular production. Reports ahead of the inauguration put the expected supply at around 12.5 mmcf per day.

According to Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL), around Tk 200 crore, including VAT and income tax, was spent on drilling and completing the well.

The company expects the additional domestic gas supply to help ease pressure on the national gas supply system and support industries and power plants.

Titas-28 is one of the wells being drilled under the government’s plan to increase domestic gas production. BGFCL currently operates six gas fields, including Titas, Habiganj, Bakhrabad, Narsingdi, Meghna and Kamta.
