The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday said that the government’s threat to try BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in special tribunals to sentence her to jail could not weaken the opposition.
BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon at a briefing at the party’s central office asked the government to take all necessary steps to ensure safe visit and travel of holidaymakers on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and their safe return to their respective work places.
In an oblique reference to information minister Hasanul Huq Inu’s recent comments that trial of Khaleda in special tribunals would begin after Eid, the BNP leader urged the government to get prepared for the trials of themselves.
Ripon termed ‘false’ and ‘baseless’ allegations for which the government was speaking about setting up special tribunals for trying Khaleda.
He asked the government to take sincere efforts to prove the allegation Khaleda raised over the violence.
He said that the BNP repeatedly demanded an international investigation into the violence under the supervision of United Nations and BNP would be able to prove their allegation about the mastermind of the firebomb attacks on at transports during the recent anti-government movement.
The BNP spokesman criticised the government saying that already tickets for trains and government-run bus services were sold out in black market and old and rundown buses were being operated being polished ahead of Eid.
Unfit launches also used to be polished ahead of each Eid and operating overloaded causing accidents, he said.
He asked the government to remain alert so that passengers would not face robbery on roads and face any untoward incidents at bus terminals.
He said it was not good to remove a minister for absence from meeting keeping corrupt ministers in the cabinet.
