BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed on Saturday said his party leader Tarique Rahman did not go to the UK for treatment giving any undertaking or accepting any condition as he had been there with the High Court permission.

“I’ve gone through the bail order of Tarique and didn’t find any condition or undertaking mentioned there. He didn’t secure bail giving any undertaking nor accepting any condition,” the noted lawyer told a discussion.

Moudud said the ministers and ruling party leaders did not read even once the bail order of BNP senior vice chairman Tarique but are making unguarded remarks about it.

The opposition BNP arranged the discussion at the auditorium of Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh on the life and works of Ziaur Rahman, marking his 32nd death anniversary, with Dhaka City unit BNP convener Sadeque Hossain Khoka in the chair.

Moudud, a former Law Minister, alleged the government and the ruling party men are carrying out ‘false propaganda’ against Tarique though the current regime could not prove any allegation brought against him in its four-and-a-half-year rule.

Claiming that Interpol has no authority to arrest Tarique, he said the ruling party men have no idea about the Interpol but claiming to bring the BNP leader back home through it.

The BNP policymaker said Tarique will return home at the appropriate time and no power will be able to resist his homecoming.

Tarique, the eldest son of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and current chairperson Khaleda Zia, has been staying in London since 2008. He came to the spotlight after he addressed a meeting of BNP in East London on May 20.

On Sunday, a Dhaka court issued a warrant for the arrest of Tarique in a money-laundering case and asked the government to take necessary steps to bring him back with the help of Interpol.

Tarique, arrested on March 7, 2007 during the army-backed interim regime, was freed from jail on bail on September 3, 2008 and left for London for treatment eight days later.

Mentioning that there is no rule of law in the country and democracy and freedom of press, Moudud said the aim of their ongoing movement under the leadership of Khaleda is to reestablish democracy and people’s rights instead of going to power.

No movement of people had failed in the past, he said, adding that their movement will surely be fruitful and the government will be forced to meet their demand for restoration of the caretaker government through it.

Moderated by BNP publicity affairs secretary and opposition chief whip Zainul Abedin Farroque, the discussion was addressed, among others, by senior BNP leaders and pro-BNP intellectuals. They recalled the outstanding contributions of Ziaur Rahman to the country’s Liberation War and its development.

Addressing the programme, another BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said Awami League fears dead Zia more than alive Zia as he was the most successful leader and statesman of the country.

“Zia was successful where the Awami League Leader (Sheikh Mujibur Rahman) was a failed one. So, the party is more afraid of dead Zia than alive Zia. As the fear haunts them, they changed the name of Zia International Airport.”

He alleged that the ministers are making reckless comments about Tarique as his one speech made the government unnerved.

Accusing the government of conspiring against the Zia family, Mosharraf urged the party men to uphold the ideals of party founder Ziaur Rahman to foil and resist any kind of conspiracy.
