Tarique fit to return or not, asks British MP

A British MP has asked the country’s health secretary whether Tarique Rahman, BNP senior vice chairman and son of ex-prime minister Khaleda Zia, is now able to return to Bangladesh or not.

Nadine Dorries, an MP of House of Commons, sent a letter to Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Heath, Department of Health, UK, on February 27, to know about Tarique’s heath condition.

The Dhaka Tribune has obtained a copy of the letter written by the Mid Bedfordshire constituency MP from Conservative party, though its authenticity couldn’t be verified till filling of this report.

“I would like to know the actual condition of Mr Rahman, whether he is now able to return to his home or not,” Nadine Dorries writes in her letter.

“We’re recognised around the globe for our medical treatment facilities and hope that Mr. Rahman is fully recovered by now.”

Nadine says: “The media has focused on his participation in active politics here in London.”

Noting that “Bangladesh media keeps claiming” Tarique has not yet “fully recovered, despite undergoing a long treatment period” Nadine Dorries writes, “[It] seems interesting to me.”

This is quite the calumny for our medical system.”

“Tarique Rahman’s backbone was severely injured by the brutal torture upon him and he came to London for treatment by a special arrangement by the British Government,” writes MP Nadine Dorries.

Tarique, facing over a dozen cases including August 21, 2004 grenade attack cases, was arrested on March 7, 2007. He has been living in London since his release on parole by the High Court on September 11, 2008. He flew to London for treatment following his arrest and torture in custody allegedly by the military-backed caretaker government.
