Tarique engaged in conspiracies against democracy: Hanif

Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Saturday alleged that BNP’s senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman engaged himself in various conspiracies to thwart the march forward of the country’s democracy.

“Tarique Rahman is a fugitive in the eye of law as he didn’t return home abusing parole. Though it’s unfortunate, the fact is that Tarique staying aboard has engaged himself in various conspiratorial activities with an ill motive to thwart the country’s democratic march forward,” he said.

Hanif said this while addressing a press conference at the party president’s Dhanmondi office.

“We want to unequivocally say that Tarique and Koko are not above the law as all citizens of the country are equal in the eyes of law. There’s no scope for anyone to avert trial with anyone’s family identity,” he said.

Hanif said the people of the country expect that Tarique and Koko will prove themselves innocent by facing trial, if they (Tarique and Koko) think they are innocent.

Welcoming the opposition leader for her campaign to introduce a trend in governance, the Awami League leader said Khaleda, in fact, wanted to mean that she had failed to govern the country during her 2001-2006 tenure.
“Khaleda didn’t explain about her new type of government. But what has got exposed through her speech that she had failed to govern the country in 2001-2006 tenure,” he said.

Hanif also came down heavily on BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi for his remarks against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wajed Joy.

“The remarks of BNP leadership about joy are unexpected and unfortunate as those were made out of political vengeance,” Hanif added.

Rizvi in a press briefing on Friday said, “The comments of Sajeeb Wazed Joy against Tarique Rahman are distasteful, fabricated, and unguarded. We strongly protest and condemn such remarks.”

Referring to the August-21 grenade attack on an Awami League rally, Joy in a programme held recently said, “We didn’t forget the August-21 grenade attack. Grenades were thrown targeting my mom…The plan for the attack was made at Hawa Bhaban. The then Prime Minister’s son had masterminded the plan to kill my mother.”
