The Awami League-led 14-Party alliance has asked the government to slap legal charges against BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman after bringing him back to Bangladesh.

The reaction came after Tarique made his first appearance at a public meeting on Tuesday in London, where he has been staying since 2008.

Awami League Presidium member Mohammad Nasim told reporters after meeting of the 14-party alliance on Thursday evening, “Tarique Rahman is constantly plotting government’s fall from a foreign country. This conspiracy against the nation from abroad cannot be tolerated.”

Tarique had urged party leaders and activists abroad to draw attention of foreign politicians towards the ‘situation’ in Bangladesh. He had also advised them to remain active to force the government to pay heed to BNP’s caretaker government demand.

The eldest son of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia,has almost a dozen cases pending against him in Bangladesh.

Nasim said, “Everyone is equal in the eyes of law. Tarique Rahman, son of a former Prime Minister, cited medical grounds for leaving the country.”

Suranjit Sengupta, member Awami League advisory council, chaired the meeting.

On BNP’s allegations that the government is spoiling the chances of talks, Nasim claimed it was actually the other way around.

“Khaleda Zia not only rejected the Prime Minister’s call for dialogue, she even gave a 48-hour ultimatum. She tried to topple the democratic government by extending support to Hifazat-e Islam.”

The senior Awami League leader advised BNP to join Parliament to moot its ideas on the upcoming elections.

Nasim told reporters the 14-Party would begin its mass contact campaign from the first week of June. There will be consecutive mass rallies in Narail, Sirajganj, Mymensingh and Sylhet.
