He says Bangladeshis expect free, fair, inclusive polls
UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernández Taranco on Wednesday urged both the ruling and opposition camps in Bangladesh to continue the dialogue in the spirit of goodwill and compromise.
“Bangladesh leaders must continue to come together. I encourage both sides to continue the dialogue in the spirit of goodwill and compromise,” he said.
The UN envoy made the call while addressing a crowded press conference before wrapping up his six-day hectic tour of Bangladesh to help its bickering political parties reach an understanding over the next polls.
Taranco said Bangladeshis expect that the two major parties to work together constructively to overcome the current crisis and find a mutually agreeable solution for free, fair, inclusive and non-violent elections.
The UN emissary arrived here on Friday evening amid the country’s murky political situation that has made the January-5 general election uncertain.
Taranco is supposed to leave Dhaka tonight.
During his six-day tour, he met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, opposition leader Khaleda Zia twice, the Foreign Minister, PM’s advisers. Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad, Jamaat-e-Islami delegation, civil society representatives, top leaders of Awami League and BNP, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad and diplomats of different countries working in Bangladesh.
