‘Take lessons from polls defeat’

Senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta has urged party supporters to prepare for the upcoming parliamentary elections taking lessons from the results of the four city corporation polls.

Speaking at a discussion in Dhaka on Monday, the Advisory Council Member identified some reasons behind the ruling party’s debacle in Saturday’s city elections.

The mayoral candidates backed by BNP-led 18-Party Alliance – Ariful Haque Chowdhury in Sylhet, Ahsan Habib Kamal in Barisal, Mossadeque Hossain Bulbul in Rajshahi and Moniruzzaman Mani in Khulna – won the elections.

Opposition alliance candidates won 75 of the total 116 councillor posts up for grabs.

Suranjit said: “If we look at the city corporation elections, we will see that many known candidates have been defeated and many unknown candidates elected.”

“This would not have happened had our party leaders and activists reach the government’s messages of development to the people.”

He pointed out that the Awami League had no preparation to tackle the ‘misleading propaganda’ by the communal forces during the civic polls.

He said the government would be in the office only for next four months and stressed the message of development needed to be reached to the people for invigorating the party.

“The victory of a united progressive democratic force will be possible in future if we take lessons from our present mistakes,” the senior parliamentarian added.

Suranjit, also a Minister without Portfolio, was happy that the city elections were held in a free, fair and peaceful manner.

The Awami League leader was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion at Institution of Diploma Engineers auditorium at Kakrail in the city.

Ganatantri Party General Secretary Nurur Rahman Selim, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal Working Committee Member Meer Hossain Akhter and Workers Party Politburo Member Quamrul Ahsan also spoke at the discussion.
