Police today have arrested Abu Hanif Opu, an alleged criminal facing 25 cases, in connection with the shooting of school student Ethan Ahmed in Katabil, Cumilla.
Touhidul Anwar, officer-in-charge of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station, confirmed the arrest and said a foreign-made pistol, two magazines, and six rounds of live ammunition — believed to have been used in shooting — were recovered.
According to police, a dispute between the “Opu Group” and “Sabbir Group” over the drug trade began on June 24, escalating into clashes and protests by residents. On June 25, the conflict intensified into an armed clash in broad daylight, during which Ethan, a class 6 student of Rafique Uddin Memorial High School, was critically injured by a bullet.
Following the incident, Cumilla district Detective Branch (DB), in coordination with Kotwali Police Station and under senior supervision, conducted raids across Cumilla, Cox’s Bazar, and other districts. Four suspects have so far been arrested.
Police said Opu, identified as the leader of the “Opu Group,” was arrested at around 3:00am, during a nationwide operation. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed and led investigators to the recovery of the firearm from Jagannathpur under Kotwali Police Station.
Authorities noted that Opu has 25 cases filed against him under various laws. A separate case under the Arms Act is being processed in connection with the recovered weapon.
