Islamic Chhatra Shibir activists exploded at least 20 cocktails at different locations in the capital on Tuesday morning when they brought brisk processions as part of their scheduled agitation programme.
Meanwhile, Police detained seven members of Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, in Jatiya Press Club area while attempting to bring out a procession.
Shibir announced the programme protesting alleged torture on its President Delwar Hossain, who has been arrested on charges of killing, arson, vandalism and creating anarchy.
Witnesses said around 50 to 60 Shibir men brought out a brisk procession at New Market Intersection around 9:30am without any banner.
As police noticed the procession, they chased after the Shibir men, who then fled away exploding seven to eight cocktails.
In Mohakhali, some 30 to 40 Shibir activists brought out another procession near the ICDDR,B and exploded six to seven cocktails creating a panic in the area.
When police rushed to the spot, a chase and counter-chase took place among them for few minutes. However, the Shibir men ran away in face of police chase.
Police also fired three to four rounds of bullets to disperse the Shibir men, said Biplab Kumer Sarkar, deputy commissioner (Tejgaon division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The Shibir men brought out another brisk procession at Doyaganj intersection, but they ran away before police rushed to the spot.
Meanwhile, Shahbagh police arrested seven suspected Shibir men near Jatiya Press Club area around 10:00am while they were roaming around suspiciously, said Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station.
“They were getting prepared to bring out a procession and the mobile sets seized from their possessions also proof that they had been trying to communicate each other at that time.
