An activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, was arrested on charge of threatening to blow up Egyptian embassy in the capital.
The arrest was made on a tip-off, Deputy Commissioner (Public Relations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Masudur Rahman told The Daily Star.
Shawkat Afsar was arrested from Focus Coaching Centre at Farmgate at noon, Masudur said.
On Tuesday, the embassy received a letter that demanded an end to crackdown on the members of Muslims Brotherhood in Egypt.
Later, the authorities decided to shut the consular section of the Egyptian embassy for 11 days from Wednesday “due to some security reasons”.
On information, the law enforcement agencies beefed up security measures on and around the embassy in Gulshan.
Shibir men on Tuesday brought out a procession and blasted a crude bomb in the capital’s Dhanmondi, protesting “the recent crackdown on Muslim Brotherhood members in Egypt”.
The BBC reports that about 900 people have reportedly been killed in Egypt since last Wednesday, when the army cleared protest camps set up by supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi.
Of the dead, more than 100 were cops and soldiers while many were members of the Muslim Brotherhood movement.
