Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Sunday the remarks of former Supreme Court judge AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury about the court is tantamount to contempt of court.
The BNP leader made the remarks after placing wreaths at the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on the Dhaka University premises marking the poet’s 41st death anniversary.
Fakhul said all of the Appellate Division judges of the Supreme Court gave the 16th amendment annulment verdict unanimously.
“The language the former judge used to raise questions about the matter seems that he didn’t have the quality to be a justice. His remarks are tantamount to contempt of court.”
He further said, “What he said is clearly contempt of court.”
Addressing a discussion meeting at the capital on Saturday, former SC judge Shamsuddin Chowdhury remarked that the government is not bound to accept the SC verdict on 16th amendment.
He also said the remarks made in the much-talked-about verdict are “ill-motivated” and “beyond the law”.
