Bangladesh Nationalist Party vice-chairman, Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, was released from Kashimpur Central Jail-2 in Gazipur on Friday noon after the Supreme Court upheld a High Court bail order that cleared the way for his release.
Jail officials said that the BNP senior leader was released around 1:30pm after the authorities examined his bail documents.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Appellate Division upheld a High Court bail order that had granted to Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury in two cases.
On May 6, the High Court granted interim bail to Shamsher Mobin in two cases relating to clashes between activists of the ruling party and the BNP during former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s appearance in a makeshift court at Bakshibazar on December 24, 2014.
Of the two cases, one was filed with the Shahbagh police station against 22 leaders and activists of BNP for allegedly assaulting Awami League MP Chhabi Biswas at Dhaka Medical College and setting his vehicle on fire there during the clashes.
The other was filed with the Chawkbazar police station against 76 leaders and activists for allegedly obstructing on-duty policemen from performing duties during the violence.
Plain-clothes police arrested Shamsher, also a war-wounded freedom fighter, at his Banani DOHS residence on January 8 and he was remanded in custody for five days for interrogation over allegedly instigating clashes.
