Senior journalist Mahbubul Alam dies

Mahbubul Alam started his career as a journalist in 1953

Former adviser of caretaker government and also the former editor of English daily Independent, Mahbubul Alam has breathed his last at a city hospital on Friday morning.

He was 78.

Brigadier General (Rtd) Shahidul Haque Mallik, director of Birdem, told the Dhaka Tribune that the senior journalist died at the hospital aound 9:20am.

He was suffering from old age complications, said family members. Mahbubul Alam was on life support from Thursday at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of BIRDEM Hospital when his condition deteriorated.

Alam went on retirement on October 19 last year after serving The Independent as the editor for 18 years. Later, he was made an adviser to the BEXIMCO Group.

He was also the Managing Director and Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS). Mahbubul Alam started his career as a journalist in 1953.

In separate messages, President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Opposition Leader Rawshan Ershad and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia have expressed profound shock at the demise of the veteran journalist.

According to Independent Television report, the body would be taken to the residence of Mahbub’s younger brother in Gulshan 2 from Birdem hospital. Mahbub’s first namaz-e-janaza will be held at Gulshan Azad mosque after Asar prayer.
