SCC, RCC mayors take charge

The new mayors of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) and Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) took the charge of their corporations on Wednesday, over three months after they had been elected.

Acting SCC mayor Mohammad Shahjahan handed over the charge to new SCC mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury at a ceremony at the Nagar Bhaban at noon.

Speaking on the occasion, the new mayor vowed to keep the corporation out of politics and assured the city dwellers of providing the services of the corporation for their welfare.

He sought cooperation from all for the development activities of the city corporation.

Separately, new mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul took over the corporation in the afternoon.

Acting RCC mayor Shariful Islam Babu handed over the charge to Bulbul, also a leader of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, youth front of the opposition BNP, around 3pm.

Election to four city corporations – Sylhet, Rajshahi, Barisal and Khulna – was held on June 15 this year.

BNP-backed candidate Ariful Haque defeated Awami League-blessed Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran while Bulbul defeated his rival ruling Awami League-supported candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton in the SCC and RCC polls respectively.

However, they were not given the charge as five-year tenure of the last SCC and RCC expired on Tuesday.
