Police arrested a leader of ‘Sayeedi Mukti Songram Parishad’, a platform campaigning for the release of Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-ameer Delwar Hossain Sayedee on a death row in a war crime case, while distributing leaflets at Badaghat Bazar in Tahirpur upazila of the district on Friday.
The arrestee was Saidur Rahman, 38, son of Akkas Ali, hailing from Binnobait village in Belabo upazila of Narsingdi district.
On February 28, International Crimes Tribunal-1 gave death sentence to Delwar Hossain Sayedee for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
Police said Saidur in association with activists of Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir formed ‘Sarbodolio Sayeedi Mukti Songram Parishad’ at the playground of Joynal Abedin Girls’ High School in the upazila headquarters some days ago.
At noon the same day, police, on secret information, arrested him from Badaghat Bazar at the time of distributing leaflets demanding release of the Jamaat bigwig.
Sub-inspector Shafiqul Alam Chowdhury of Tahirpur Police Station confirmed the news, saying that legal actions would be taken against Saidur under the existing law.
