Saber: IPU result reflects global confidence

The reception programme held at the National Parliament premises on Wednesday evening

The result of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) election proved that the parliamentarians of the democratic countries have their confidence in the democracy of Bangladesh, said the newly elected IPU president Saber Hossain Chowdhury.

The ruling Awami league lawmaker made the statement while addressing a reception accorded to the Speaker of the Parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Choudhury and Saber Hossin for their achievement in the CPA and IPU elections.

The reception programme was held at the National Parliament premises on Wednesday evening.

Terming his achievement as the victory of the nation, Saber said: “The victory proves that the international community have recognised Bangladesh as a democratic country. Parliamentary democracy is our pride.”

He also emphasised on strengthening the democratic institutes and culture in the country in order to take Bangladesh further ahead.

Earlier on October 16, Saber Hossain Chowdhury was elected the new president of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

In the election, Saber secured 169 votes and his nearest contestant parliament speaker of Australia Bronwyn Bishop got 95 votes, a parliament secretariat press release said.

Bangladesh was the one and only country who fought for the post from the third world countries.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has congratulated Saber Hossain Chowdhury for his achievement.

In a congratulatory message, Sheikh Hasina said through the victory of Saber Hossain Chowdhury in the IPU, another feather has been added to Bangladesh’s success in creating global leadership.
