State Minister for Science and Technology Yeafesh Osman on Friday said readymade garment (RMG) owners should consult structural engineers for examining their factory buildings and take steps for the required retrofitting.
“On the aftermath of Savar tragedy, the garment owners are in a fear about the structures. Engineers should convey the message that weak structures can be strengthened through underpinning,” he said.
Yeafesh Osman was addressing a roundtable conference, titled ‘Problems of Engineers Serving in Private Enterprises’ organised by the Civil Engineering Division (CED) of Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), at the IEB Headquarters.
The State Minister said structural aspect has a major role to play in the retrofitting and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) should approach with a quick work plan.
Yeafesh added that all the structures in the RMG sector should undergo thorough checkup by structural engineers.
Presided over by CED chairman Gholam Mostofa, the roundtable conference was also addressed by IEB president M Shamim Z Bosunia.
