The BNP has appointed standing committee member Ruhul Kabir Rizvi as its acting secretary general.

The appointment was made under Article 7(B)(6) of the BNP’s constitution with immediate effect, according to a media statement issued by the party on Thursday.

The development comes hours after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected the 23rd president of Bangladesh.

On August 13, Fakhrul resigned as BNP secretary general and standing committee member following his nomination for the presidential race.

Two days later on August 15, Rizvi, the then senior joint secretary general of the party, was inducted into the BNP’s standing committee, the highest policymaking body, along with three other leaders.
