Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon on Wednesday blamed the Election Commission for its failure to check anomalies and election frauds in the just-concluded staggered upazila elections.
“The Election Commission will have to shoulder the responsibility for whatever anomalies and flaws took place in the elections. If the commission had really taken harsher steps, we would not have seen these anomalies,” he said.
Participating in thanksgiving motion on the President’s speech, the minister also come down heavily on the newspapers for putting the entire upazila elections under question.
“When BNP did good in initial phases of the upazila elections, the newspapers said the elections were fair, but when BNP failed to fare well (in the next phases), the newspapers said no election can be worse than this,” he said.
Criticising BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her eldest son Tarique Rahman for their recent remarks that Ziaur Rahman was the first president of the country, Menon said it is nothing but falsehood.
