The Election Commission on Tuesday asked the political parties and election candidates to remove all sorts of posters, stickers, banners and billboards and erase graffiti being used as part of their electioneering.
“All concerned have been asked to remove all sorts of election campaign materials like posters, stickers, banners and billboards and erase graffiti within the next 48 hours at their own initiatives and costs,” said an EC circular issued on Tuesday evening.
It said every contestant or on his behalf must comply with the election code of conduct during the pre-election time — from the date of announcement of election schedule to the date of publishing election results through gazette notifications.
No candidate can begin election campaign three weeks before the date of voting.
If anyone violates the code to be deemed as an offence and punishable by jail terms for maximum six months or a fine of maximum Tk 50,000 or by both. In case of political party, it will be fined maximum Tk 50,000, the circular reminded.
The commission directed the law enforcers to take proper steps for compliance of the EC directives.
The EC asked the probable candidates to comply with the code of conduct strictly.
As per the code of conduct, no one is allowed to paste any sort of poster, leaflet or handbill on any transport including water vessels, bus, truck and train, and wall, tree, fence, electric and telephone polls and any other pillars, or any establishment of public and local authorities.
In line with the code, no registered political party and candidates can do graffiti on walls, roof, pillar, bridge, road divider, transport or any other structure.
