Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said this year Pahela Baishakh celebrations will be held under ‘strict restrictions’ in view of incidents of sexual harassment during the festivity on the Dhaka University campus last year.
Amidst criticism for imposing restrictions on the celebration while failing to arrest the accused, police said no one would be allowed to enter Ramna Park and Suhrawardy Udyan after 4pm.
All the programmes would have to be over by 5pm, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam in a press conference on Wednesday.
During Pahela Baishakh celebrations last year, a group of youths had sexually harassed some women in the TSC area of Dhaka University.
Normally the programme begins at the Batamul of Ramna at dawn and continues at Dhaka University, Ramna and Suhrawardy Udyan area until night.
Honking vuvuzela and wearing masks will be strictly forbidden, said the home minister.
