Condemned convict of Ramna blast case held

Rapid Action Battalion have arrested a death convict in Ramna Batamul bomb blast killing case from Keraniganj area in the capital.

The arrestee is Abu Bakar Siddique alias Hafez Selim, the associate of Mufti Abdul Hannan,  the chief of banned Islamist outfit Harkat-ul Jihad Al-Islami Bangladesh (Huji-B).

RAB Director (Legal and Media) Mufti Mahmud Khan said: “A team of RAB personnel, in a drive, arrested Siddique from Keraniganj on Thursday morning.”

On June 23, Chief of banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Mufti Abdul Hannan and seven of his aides were awarded death sentence in Ramna Batamul bomb blast killing case.

Ten people were killed in a bomb blast incident during the traditional celebrations of the Bangla New Year at the capital’s Ramna Batamul in 2001.

The first bomb exploded around 8:05am and the other 10-15 minutes later. Seven innocent people died on the spot during the first explosion and 20-25 people sustained injuries. Later three persons died at hospitals while undergoing treatment.
