The US ambassador in Dhaka, Dan Mozena, has urged Bangladesh government to conduct “thorough, timely and credible” investigations into all allegations of human rights violations against Bangladesh’s elite police unit RAB.
While distributing certificates to a group of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officers who underwent criminal investigation and instructor development courses with US help at its headquarters in Dhaka on Thursday, Mozena said on the government should report the findings of those investigations “in a transparent manner” as he said “every Bangladeshi knows recent events have cast a dark shadow over the RAB”.
Meanwhile , BNP vice chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka on Tuesday urged the government to withdraw military personnel from the elite force to save the army’s image. “The army should take back its members from Rab… We want to see a bright image of our army officials,” he said.
Addressing a rally at the Jatiya Press Club, Khoka, also the BNP Dhaka city unit convener, alleged that a conspiracy is on to tarnish the image of the country’s armed forces.
Speaking at the programme, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir again demanded that Rab be disbanded immediately. He said BNP had formed Rab to remove militancy and terrorism from the country, but the incumbent government has spoiled it by using it on political purposes.
