Police have handed the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel, who the villagers of Manikganj’s Shibaloy detained believing they were robbers, over to one of their camp commanders.
The 14 men in plainclothes were detained at Shaljana around 2am Tuesday.
They were taken to RAB-4 camp on Wednesday morning.
Police, however, said they were unaware of what the personnel were doing in the area because RAB did not reveal details of the operation they were on.
Police also did not have prior knowledge of their plan.
The team of five from RAB headquarters was headed to Saljana village in a black van when a front tyres got stuck on the mud road at around 2am, said Shibaloy Police OC Rakibuzzaman.
They took a ‘Dheki’, a lever used in rural areas to smash grain, from a nearby hut to pull up their vehicle but the noise made the owners woke up and they began screaming in panic thinking the men were robbers.
Villagers rushed in to detain the men.
Nine RAB personnel from Savar camp went to their colleague’s aid, in vain, as they were also detained as suspects.
OC Rakibuzzaman said he went to the site with his team at 5am and rescued the RAB men and brought them to the station.
RAB-4 Commander Lt Col Faizul Islam Mandal went over to Shibalay Police Station in the morning and the 14 personnel were handed over to him.
Lt Col Mandal did not respond when he was called for his comment.
