The first public examination for primary students will be held at the end of Class-VIII from now on, as per the government decision to elevate primary level education to class 8.
“Primary students will now sit for the Primary Education Completion Examination at the end of Class-VIII,” Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman told reporters at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
As per the existing system, Class-V students appear at the PEC examination and those of Class-VIII sit for the Junior Certificate Examination (JSC).
The minister said a draft has already been made for taking one examination instead of two, and it will be placed before the Cabinet meeting soon for its approval.
“Once the Cabinet gives its nod to the proposal, only one examination will be held from the next test,” he said.
According to the National Education Policy 2010, the primary education level will be from Class-I to Class-VIII and it will gradually come under the jurisdiction of the Primary and Mass Education Ministry, Mostafizur Rahman said.
He said they have chalked out an action in this connection.
Earlier on May 18, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the government has decided to elevate the primary education level up to Class-VIII.
The Primary and Mass Education Minister said the deputy commissioners and education officers concerned have been directed to provide a list of the students who were affected by cyclone ‘Roanu’ in the coastal areas.
“They’ll be provided with books which were damaged by the storm,” he said.
