Authorities of Viquarunnisa Noon School and College on Tuesday refused to enrol students who had been selected for migration to the college.
A group of guardians and students blocked the road in front of the college and took part in a sit-in demanding the students be enrolled.
Guardians said the education boards had published the second merit list for enrollment to higher secondary courses at colleges Monday evening and 44 students of different colleges were selected for migration to Viquarunnisa Noon School and College.
‘The authorities refuse to enroll my daughter when we came to the college Tuesday morning’ said Kazi Rashid Ahmed, a guardian.
Two others guardians, Mohammad Yousuf and Waliullah, faced the same refusal. They said their daughters’ academic life was at risk as they had applied for migration from the colleges selected in the first merit list.
Viquarunnisa Noon School and College principal Sufia Khatun said they would first complete admission of students directly qualifying for their college and review the issue of migrants on July 9-10.
Inter-education board coordination subcommittee and Dhaka Education Board chairman Abu Bakar Siddique said the college has to admit students who are selected through migration.
About 52,000 students were not selected in the first and second merit list. This year, 11.57 lakh students applied for admission and board uploaded the first list of over 10.93 lakh students, and 17,647 students in the second list.
A Dhaka education board official said most of the 52,000 students obtained commendable results but were not selected as they had chosen only top colleges.
Some students were left out in the first and second merit list as the seats of colleges the students’ chose were not available. These students will need to choose other colleges by July 9 and 10 and results of the third merit list will be published on July 11, he said.
Abu Bakar said the students who were left out in the three merit lists and had not applied further, would be allowed to apply between July 13 and 21, and will be allowed to enroll with colleges on July 25 and 26.
The students will be allowed admission without any late fee till July 26, he said.
Students have been suffering a lot in getting enrolled to higher secondary courses at colleges across the country ever since the online admission system was introduced this year.
Hundreds of students had to deal with different kinds of mistakes done by the education boards.
This year, the government introduced the online application whereby a student mentions five colleges as preference in the application and the education board chooses one for him or her in the end.

We have trust in the goodness of the Education Minister & should accept few hic-ups in the new system. Hopefully, by end July, things will settle down. Monopoly of some highly rated Colleges needed to be put in order.
