Probe against politicians not eyewash: ACC

The probes carried out by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) into the graft allegations against politicians and top officials of government are not eyewash, said ACC secretary M Faizur Rahman Chowdhury on Monday.

 

“We’re probing the graft allegations. The ACC never works for eyewash. It always conducts inquiries and investigations independently,” he told the Commission’s monthly briefing at its head office in the capital.

 

Earlier, on January 12 last, the ACC launched probes into the allegations of unusual wealth accumulation by seven politicians.

 

The ACC in its first phase is now conducting probes into the graft allegations against former Health Minister Dr AFM Ruhal Haque, former State Minister for Housing and Public Works Abdul Mannan Khan, former State Minister for Water Resources Mahbubur Rahman, Enamul Haque, MP, (Rajshahi-4), Abdur Rahman Bodi, MP, (Ukhia-Teknaf), Aslamul Haque, MP, (Dhaka-14) and Abdul Jabbar, a former MP, (Satkhira-2).

 

On February 6 last, the ACC decided to launch probes against some secretaries and top officials of the government who took freedom fighter (FF) certificates prior to their retirement.

 

Describing the ACC’s activities, Faizur Rahman Chowdhury said the ACC approved filing of 18 cases and submitting 38 charge-sheets before court in January last.

 

He said six graft cases filed by the ACC settled in court while the accused of two cases convicted. The accused in the remaining four cases were acquitted during the period.
