Pro-BNP academic Emajuddin Ahmed has demanded army deployment a week before the Dhaka and Chittagong city corporation polls saying the situation is ‘not natural’.
He is convenor of the BNP’s ‘Adarsha Dhaka Andolan’ (ideal Dhaka movement), formed to support party-endorsed candidates in the polls.
“The Dhaka and Chittagong city polls are going to be held in an unnatural situation,” the pro-BNP leader of professionals said at a discussion in Dhaka on Friday.
“It’s a challenge for us.
“I request the Election Commission to deploy the army a week before the polls to ensure hassle-free polling.”
The BNP has endorsed candidates for the crucial Apr 28 city polls.
Last mayors of Dhaka and Chittagong were supported by the BNP.
Emajuddin urged the voters to “guard ballot boxes to prevent rigging”.
“There’s no doubt that we’ll win the polls if the election is free and fair,” he said.
In another event, Khandker Mahbub Hossain called on BNP supporters to start campaigning for party-endorsed candidates.
“We have a chance to give a fitting reply to the government through ballots in this city elections… The people will show that they are with the BNP,” he said.
