The government has sent a strong message of good governance by curbing commodity prices, restoring financial discipline, and ensuring corruption‑free project reviews, Mahdi Amin, adviser to the prime minister, said yesterday while highlighting the government’s successes in its first five months in office.

“The government is working to pave the way for building a humane, non-discriminatory, and secure Bangladesh,” he said at a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office.

He mentioned that the rehabilitation of recent flood victims and the reconstruction of the devastated and plundered health and education sectors were underway.

Mahdi, also the spokesperson for PMO, highlighted swift judicial outcomes and noted that a rape‑and‑murder case in Pallabi saw verdict delivery within 19 days, while another child rape case in Meherpur was concluded in 29 working days

He added that Muzaffar Hossain was arrested in Dhaka last week, 45 years after the assassination of then-president Ziaur Rahman.

The extradition process to bring back convicted Awami League chief and ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India is ongoing, and former IGP Benazir Ahmed has been arrested in Dubai with the assistance of Interpol, he said.

The government earned public trust by keeping manifesto promises, demonstrating the capability to tackle immediate challenges, and prioritising national sovereignty, he said.

Highlighting achievements in the economic sector, Mahdi said, “Inflation has come down to 9.16 percent due to well-planned management, and foreign exchange reserves stand at $36.58 billion. A record 3.75 billion dollars in remittances was received last March.”

On public welfare initiatives, Mahdi said the government has waived agricultural loans of up to Tk 10,000, including interest, for 12 lakh farmers, supplied rice at Tk 15 per kg to 55 lakh families, and announced free education for female students up to the honours level.

To protect the environment, initiatives have been taken to plant 25 crore trees over the next five years and introduce 250 eco-friendly electric buses in Dhaka, he said.

Mahdi said, “Bangladesh First” policy has been adopted in foreign relations. At least 17 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed and investment proposals worth $ 9.21 billion were received during the prime minister’s visit to China.

Expressing solidarity with Palestine, the words “except Israel” have also been re-incorporated into passports.

The spokesperson added that the prime minister has broken traditional protocol to follow traffic rules by stopping his car at signals and has banned the use of his personal photographs at official events.

The PM’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibli and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman also spoke at the press conference, moderated by the PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony.
