Pro-hartal elements torched 12 vehicles in separate places of the city on Monday, ahead of Tuesday’s daylong countrywide shutdown of the BNP-led 18-party alliance.
Police said one bus was set ablaze near Banga Bazar at about 9:42pm while another at Bijoynagar around 10:45pm.
Fire Service sources said two private cars and a microbus of ATN News were set afire by hartal supporters near BNP’s Nayapaltan central office around 12:35 pm.
Witnesses said two more media house vehicles — one of Maasranga Television and another of Boishakhi Television — were vandalised in the area at that time apart from explosions of several crude bombs.
Around 12:25pm, a BRTC bus set afire by pro-hartal activists in front of Dhaka University’s Shahidullah Hall.
Besides, a staff bus of Titas Gas was set afire by the hartal supporters in front of BGMEA building at Karwanbazar at about 3:40 pm.
Meanwhile, hartal supporters set fire to a bus at Tibet intersection in Tejgaon area around 4:26 pm, a Turag Paribahan bus in front of BTV Bhaban at Rampura at about 7:10 pm, a taxicab in front of ATN Bangla at Karwanbazar at about 7:30 pm, a coach of ‘Shyamoli Paribahan’ at Sayedabad bus terminal around 7:40 pm and a bus in front of Adabar Police Station at about 9:22 pm.
The opposition alliance called the shutdown demanding the release of its leaders and workers arrested on March 11.
