BNP standing committee member MK Anwar on Wednesday warned the government that people will strongly resist its any move to hold the next general election under a party government.
“The next general election must be held under a non-party caretaker government. We want to clearly state that people will foil through a strong resistance any move to hold the polls under a party government,” he said.
Addressing a discussion, titled ‘Tarique Rahman and Future Bangladesh’ organised by Nationalist Research Cnetre (NRC) at the Jatiya Press Club, Anwar also threatened that they will not allow any one to go to voting centre to cast vote in the election if it is held under a party government.
The BNP leader urged the government to come to the line of people by stopping repression, oppression, corruption and forced disappearance and shunning the politics of vengeance.
Referring to the victories of the BNP-backed candidates in the five city corporations’ polls, he said the ruling party will face more humiliating defeat in the national election as people awaken up against this regime.
Anwar said ‘false cases’ were filed against BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman but the government could not prove any of the allegations against him.
He also alleged that the government is spreading propaganda against Tarique Rahman to make a petty political gain and divert people’s attention from the corruption by the Prime Minister’s family members.
The BNP leader alleged that the government has the sacrificed the Padmda Bridge shattering people’s long-cherished dream only to save some corrupt people.
Chaired by former DU VC Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, the function was addressed, among others, by BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman, chairperson’s advisers Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Shawkat Mahmud and Jubo Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal.
