Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday hoped that the violence of burning people to death will not recur in Bangladesh as the nation has overcome the atrocities of last three months.
“We hope the people will no more be burnt to death and they will live in comfort with peace and security. Thus the country would progress socioeconomically,” the news agency BSS quoted Sheikh Hasina as saying.
She said this while exchanging Bangla Nabobarsho greetings with the leaders and activists of Awami League and its associate organisations at her official Ganobhaban residence.
Blaming the BNP alliance for introducing the trend of killing people, the premier asked how a person with minimum sense can commit such crimes.
“The BNP has initiated the culture of burning people to death… But how a person who has minimum sense of humanity can commit such cruel acts?” Hasina wondered.
The Awami League president said the country went through “disasters” and people suffered repression during the three-month long movement by the BNP-Jamaat combine.
“Various incidents including burning people to death took place during the period that was not acceptable to anyone,” the BSS report also quoted her.
The prime minister blamed BNP and its allies for torching vehicles and killing people and damaging their property.
However, Sheikh Hasina claimed the people contained the violence of BNP-Jamaat alliance.
“The people and law enforcement agencies contained the subversive acts of BNP-Jamaat. Consequently, we’ve been able to overcome the situation,” she said.
The prime minister expressed her satisfaction as people from all walks of life can celebrate Pahela Boishakh with fanfare and festivity in recent times, the BSS report wrote.
