Police are abusing power to torture people with backing from the government, Khaleda Zia has claimed.
“There are policemen who are abusive and have gotten involved in serious corruption. These days, police abduct people and demand ransom from them,” said the BNP chief at an Iftar gathering on Sunday.
“They no longer serve the people. Their reach has gotten too long. We were once told that the law has a long reach, but police seem to have outpaced it.
“They say they’re the ones keeping this government in power,” the former prime minister said.
She was speaking after Iftar at the event organised by pro-BNP Doctors Association of Bangladesh at the Ladies Club in Dhaka’s Eskaton.
“Democracy is now in exile. Law and order is absent. The people are continually facing abductions, murders and torture.”
She further alleged that health sector and the judiciary were being politicised.
