Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said police officers guilty of negligence over the murder of Sylhet teenager Samiul Alam Rajan would face ‘stern action’.
The action would be based on the report of the committee formed after the killing to investigate the role of police, he told journalists at the Osmani International Airport in Sylhet on Friday.
He was leaving for Dhaka after a three-day visit.
The three-member committee was formed on July 14 to look into allegations against police of negligence in starting the case related to Rajan’s murder and of helping the suspects escape.
The committee chief, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Rokan Uddin, submitted the 424-page report to SMP Commissioner Kamrul Ahsan on Thursday.
“Those who are found guilty in the report will face action. The government will interfere, if necessary,” the minister said.
On July 8, Rajan was beaten to death on suspicion of theft at Kumargaon village in Sylhet.

One of the assailants had filmed the whole incident and later released it on the internet. The 28-minute video clip generated outrage after going viral on social media.
Police arrested 12 people in connection with the murder. Seven of them provided confessional statements in the court.
The government said it was trying to bring back a suspect, Kamrul Islam, who fled to Saudi Arabia but was caught by locals there.
Rajan’s father had claimed Jalalabad Police Station Inspector (Investigations) Alamgir Hossain and Sub-Inspector Aminul Islam helped Kamrul escape and tried to save his brother Muhit Alam, another suspect.
He also accused the police of behaving roughly when he had gone to the police station to lodge the complaint.
SI Islam was withdrawn from Jalalabad Police Station after the committee found primary evidence against him.
On the first day of his Sylhet visit, the minister went to Rajan’s home to commiserate with the bereaved parents.
There have been reports that the probe panel found evidence of police negligence and political influence on them. But panel chief Uddin and the SMP chief declined to comment.
“I cannot divulge details as I am yet to read the probe report submitted to my office,” Kamrul Ahsan told journalists.
