Investigators said Forkan Mia, a rental car driver, carried out the killings before fleeing the scene.
Their suspicions are bolstered by a “note” found at the crime scene, purportedly written by Forkan, alleging systematic physical abuse and financial betrayal by his in-laws.
The victims have been identified as Forkan’s wife Sharmin, 30, their daughters Mim, 15, and Maria, 8; their 2-year-old son Farid, all identified with single names; and Sharmin’s brother, Rasul Mia, 22.
The scene at the rented house in Rautkona village depicted a chilling sequence of events.
While the three children were found lying side-by-side on the floor, Rasul’s body was found on a bed.
Sharmin’s body, dressed in jewelry and a saree, was found with her hands and mouth tied, lashed to a window grille.
Police also recovered a blood-stained kitchen knife believed to be the murder weapon, along with alcohol bottles and drug paraphernalia.
Kapasia Police chief Shahinur Alam said the note found at the scene was addressed to the chief of Gopalganj Sadar Police.
In the “note”, Forkan accused 11 people — including his wife, parents-in-law, and brother-in-law — of torturing him.
The “note” also alleged that Sharmin’s father had taken Tk 1 million from Forkan to purchase land but failed to settle the matter.
It also accused Sharmin of having an extramarital affair and claimed that on May 3, the accused individuals had confined and physically assaulted Forkan.
According to police, after the killings occurred late Friday night, Forkan allegedly informed his cousin Abu Musa and his brother-in-law Jabbar Ali of the incident over the phone.
Following the tip-off, relatives rushed to the house and alerted the authorities.
Sharmin’s other brother, identified only as Shamim, told reporters that Forkan had lured the victim Rasul to the house on Friday under the pretext of finding him a job.
“We are primarily treating this as a case of extreme family feud,” said Shahinur.
“Forkan remains the primary suspect, and multiple teams are working to track him down.”
