The head of the Police Reform Commission, Safar Raj Hossain, has said a proposal will be made to limit the use of lethal weapons by police.
The policy for using these weapons will follow models from various European countries, Safar Raj said on Sunday during a discussion session with families affected by police brutality over the past 15 years, including victims of enforced disappearances and families of those killed in police shootings during the student-public movement in July-August.
He emphasized that the police should never act as adversaries of the general public, adding that training will be provided to ensure that the use of life-threatening weapons by the police is minimized.
According to a press release, the meeting was held at the International Mother Language Institute in the capital.
The session was moderated by student representative and commission member Md Zarif Rahman.
During the meeting, attendees shared their experiences and proposed ideas for police reforms to the commission.
The Police Reform Commission updated the participants and media representatives about the progress of their work.
Families of victims described their suffering and helplessness in the face of police abuse.
As part of its ongoing efforts, the commission is organizing workshops and meetings with stakeholders at various levels to implement a modern and effective reform plan.
