PM to declare nationalisation of 26,000 pry schools tomorrow

Jobs of 1,03,885 teachers to be regularised

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will announce nationalisation of 26,193 non-government primary schools of the country on Wednesday.

Under the scheme, the jobs of 1,03,885 teachers of these schools will be nationalised in three phases.

The PM will make the announcement at a teachers’ grand rally at National Parade Ground in the capital.

Over one lakh teachers are expected to attend the rally, Primary and Mass Education Minister Afsarul Ameen said while talking to reporters at a press briefing at the ministry on Tuesday.

A total of 22,981 schools that have already been getting Monthly Pay Order (MPO) from the government will be nationalised in first phase.

A total of 2,252 schools which are not getting the MPO benefits will be nationalised in the second phase on July 1.

Nationalisation of the remaining 960 schools, which either have got approval or have been waiting for approval, will take place in the third phase on January 1, 2014.

Once nationalised, the teachers of these schools will get the same salaries and benefits as those in government primary schools.

On May 27, Hasina assured the teachers of meeting their demand, and directed the primary and mass education ministry to draft a policy to this end.

The ministry then formed a committee that prepared the draft policy and submitted before it.

The government first nationalised 36,165 primary schools in 1973. Later, 1,507 more schools were nationalised at different times.

At present, there are over 85,000 government and non-government primary schools in the country.
