PM terms BNP an illegal party

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has termed Bangladesh Nationalist Party as an illegal organisation founded by a military ruler who seized power illegally.

“It’s unfortunate for the people of Bangladesh to hear theories  from those who have been illegal,” she told the newly elected Upazila Parishad representatives at Ganobhavan on Saturday.

The premier said “The higher court has declared illegal the rule of Ziaur Rahman who grabbing power illegally and formed his party BNP.”

“So, a party formed by such an illegal grabber of power is also illegal,” Hasina said.

Hasina, who is also the Awami League chief, was addressing the newly elected Upazila Parishad Chairmen, Vice Chairmen and female Vice Chairmen who met her at her Official Ganobhaban on Saturday afternoon.

Referring to the BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman and top BNP leaders, Hasina also said it was unfortunate for the people to hear theories about the country’s history of independence from those who belong to an unlawful party.

She said Tarique has been a fugitive after he had left the country following the 1/11 changeover giving undertaking.

“Now living abroad as a fugitive he is deliberately making irrational comments,” she said.

The Prime Minister also alleged that Tarique plotted August 21 grenade attack on her rally that killed Ivy Rahman and many others. “Now attempts are being carried out to malign those who have earned the country’s independence through the War of Liberation,”

In a scathing attack on BNP and Jamaat Hasina said that these parties do not believe in the country’s independence.

“Had they believed in our independence, they couldn’t try to distort the real history of country’s independence through illogical claims,”

She said that the BNP chairperson, her son and Jamaat could not accept the victory of Bangladesh achieved in 1971 through a bloody war. That’s why they are trying to confuse people through absurd theories.

The premier wondered, “How he (Tarique) dares to undermine the War of Liberation, how he dares to undermine the constitution of 72 which is one of the best in the world.”

She said Khaleda Zia could not pass matriculation, Tarique failed to pass HSC and Ziaur Rahman joined the Army after passing matriculation exam only.

“This is the limit of their education,” Hasina said. “With this limited knowledge they are trying to confuse the people about  the constitution, the history, the proclamation of independence and who was the country’s first president and prime minister.”

“They do not even abide by the verdict of the higher court,” she said.

Refuting the recent comments by Tarique the prime minister stated that father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the first president of Bangladesh while Tajuddin Ahmed was the first Prime Minister and Syed Nazrul Islam was the first Vice President.

She noted that traitor and killer Khondoker Mostaque made Ziaur Rahman the Army Chief and then Zia grabbed power illegally and declared himself president removing former Chief Justice-turned-President AM Sayeem.

Tungipara Upazila Parishad chairman Gazi Golam Mostafa, vice chairman Ashim Kumar Biswas and vice chairman Afsana Begum Mimi spoke at the function conducted by AL leader Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.

Turning to the recently held Upazila Parishad elections Hasina said the polls proved that her government could hold it fairly though the media said many things regarding the election.

Hasina said,”The upazila Parishad election was held in a free, fair and neutral manner as there were winning candidates from AL, BNP and Jamaat,”

“Our aim is to decentralize the government by further strengthening the local government bodies giving them more power,” she added.
