Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the cabinet secretary to officially start forming terrorism resistance committee in each district, upazila and union in consultation with the deputy commissioners to counter BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami’s anarchy.
Hasina, who heads the governing Awami League, also asked the leaders and workers of the party to assist the committees by providing names and addresses of the BNP and Jamaat men who are resorting to killings, arson, and vandalism.
Addressing a discussion at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital on Thursday, Hasina said imams, religious scholars, people’s representatives and other professionals would be kept in the committees.
“You are burning people’s houses and businesses. You [Jamaat-Shibir] have houses, families and businesses too. If people become furious and start torching and vandalising your properties then where will you go,” she posed a question.
The premier said: “We don’t believe in violence. But we’re not that much weak that we will remain sitting idle when you kill police and general people.”
Ruling AL organised the discussion marking Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic March 7 speech day. AL Presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury chaired the discussion.

Reminds me of the Peace Committees set up by Tikka Khan in 1971. Then they were formed to counter ‘miscreants’ of the AL… now we have committees to counter the ‘ Terrorists’ of the JI. The wheel has turned full circle. Will we never learn from our violent past?
