PM opens Sylhet Int’l Cricket Stadium

 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday afternoon inaugurated the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium ahead of the T20 World Cup fulfilling the long-cherished dream of the people of this area rich in natural beauty and natural resources.

 

Hasina formally inaugurated the stadium situated in Lakkatura area on the city outskirts by unveiling the plaque. Later, a munajat was offered.

 

Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta, State Minister for Youth & Sports Biren Sikder, Deputy Minister for Youth & Sports Arif Khan Joy, local MPs and Awami League leaders were present.

 

After inaugurating the stadium, Sheikh Hasina went round the grand plaza of the stadium and the main ground.

 

The stadium, which will host some 30 men’s and women’s matches of the upcoming T20 World Cup, was built at a cost of about Tk 86 crore. Nearly 400 workers toiled to build the stadium for the T20 World Cup.

 

In June last year, Finance Minister AMA Muhith inaugurated the construction work of the stadium surrounded by natural beauty including tea gardens and small hills. Initially, Tk 69 crore was allocated for the construction of the stadium. Later, the budget was increased to Tk 86 crore.

 

The stadium with the country’s first green gallery would be one of the attractive and beautiful stadiums of the world.

 

The stadium will also feature state of the art media center, pavilion, dressing room, couple of hospitality boxes, floodlights, giant screen and electronic scoreboard.

 

An ICC security team inspected the stadium a number of times during its construction and expressed satisfaction over the preparation for the T20 World Cup.
