Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday underscored the need for joint initiatives by Bangladesh and Myanmar to stop human trafficking as well as arms and drug smuggling.
“This is not possible to stop these crimes by a country alone, so we need joint initiatives,” she said stressing the importance of exchanging information in this regard.
The Prime Minister made the remarks when a six-member delegation of Myanmar Navy led by its chief Admiral Zeya Kyaw Htin Thura Thet met her at her official residence Ganobhaban in the evening.
PM’s Special Assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil briefed reporters after the meeting.
He said the Prime Minister reaffirmed that her government would not allow Bangladesh’s soil to be used for activities that are harmful to neighbouring countries.
About the maritime issue with Myanmar, Sheikh Hasina said the problems to this end have been resolved peacefully. “Now, we’ll have to ensure security in the Bay of Bengal jointly.”
The Prime Minister said many problems will be solved through exchange of experience and boosting bilateral relations between the two countries. “We can move forward further if the cooperation and harmony between the two countries could be enhanced by maintaining peaceful coexistence,” she said.
Myanmar naval chief Zeya Kyaw Htin Thura Thet said Bangladesh and Myanmar could curb smuggling and face natural disaster jointly. ”The future of this region would get better if we work together on common interests,” he said.
Thura Thet said his country would welcome any initiative for boosting trade and commerce as well as increasing maritime communication.
Highly appreciating the dynamic and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he hoped that Bangladesh would make progress further under her able leadership.
Thura Thet conveyed the greetings of the chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces to the Prime Minister.
