People ready to resist 1-sided polls: Dr Kamal

Dr Kamal Hossain

Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain today said people of the country are ready to sacrifice their life to resist any one-sided election.

“I shall give up life at first if anything other than a free, fair and neutral election takes place,” he said while presiding over a meeting organised by the party at Central Shaheed Minar marking the Dictator’s Falling Day.

On December 6, 1990, the then military ruler HM Ershad stepped down from power in the face of a mass movement.

Dr Kamal said the next parliamentary election must be held under a neutral administration and an independent Election Commission for the interest of peace, democracy and rule of law.

It has been proved several times that the people never accept any unilateral polls, he said, adding that 16 crore people of the country are now united for their right to voting, and peace.

Dr Kamal demanded that the government immediately cancel the 15th amendment to the constitution, which repealed the caretaker government system, and arrange the next general election under a neutral government and EC.

Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna said both the ruling Awami League and opposition BNP are trying to bring autocrat HM Ershad to their camps to survive in the race of possessing powers.

None of the leaders of Awami League and BNP feel the sufferings of the people, he added.
