World Bank (WB) country director Johannes Zutt on Tuesday said parliament has to play the pivotal role in ensuring transparency and accountability of government activities.
The World Bank also expects that the capacity of financial oversight committees of parliament be enhanced in the coming days, he said.
The observations came from the newly appointed country director of WB when he met Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at her Parliament office.
Speaker Shirin noted that Parliamentary Standing Committees on Public Accounts, Estimates and Undertakings have been working with the mandate to ensure transparency and accountability in government activities and made significant progress in resolving audit objections in recent times.
The process for strengthening these committees is on, she added.
Shirin also apprised Zutt of the government steps to improve the working environment in readymade garment (RMG) factories as well as to ensure the occupational safety of workers.
