Parliament on Thursday plunged into a pandemonium for a while over a heated debate on Bangladesh Liberation Force (BLF) and the role of JSD during 1972-1975.
The House suddenly turned overheated when JSD MP Mainuddin Khan Badal took the floor on a point of order and started talking about Jatiya Party MP Kazi Firoz Rashid’s statement against the JSD role after the Liberation War.
During a private member resolution, Kazi Firoz Rashid came down heavily on JSD for its, what he said, destructive politics that left thousands of freedom fighters and Awami League, Juba League and Chhatra League men dead.
Badal while opposing Firoz’s remarks about JSD faced a severe opposition from a number of treasury bench and JP members.
At this stage, Badal sought protection from Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury who was presiding over the day’s proceedings. “I need protection from the Chair…I need protection from the Chair…He (Kazi Firoz) is talking without floor,” Badal said.
The Speaker repeatedly requested Kazi Firoz Rashid to sit down and allow Badal to speak up.
Badal said the JSD has been the part of all democratic movements since its birth. “We don’t say that everything, what we’ve done were right…history will analyse who was wrong and who was right,” he said criticising Kazi Firoz Rashid.
He said the remarks made by Kazi Firoz Rashid were not decent and unfortunately his remarks were supported by some treasury bench members.
Defending his current position, Badal said history would decide if anybody thinks that his decision to follow Bangabandhu’s ideology was wrong.
Later, JP chief HM Ershad expressed displeasure over the bitter debate between Badal and Firoz Rashid.
“I’ve lost my interest to deliver my speech here. I hoped I would go back home with a good memory as this is the last day of the current session. This has not happened,” he said hoping that Badal and Kazi Firoz Rashid will close their gap.
