Assistant Consular Officer of Pakistan High Commission Mohammad Mazhar Khan left Dhaka on Saturday as the Foreign Ministry asked the mission to send him back home.
“We came to know about the illegal activities committed by Mazhar with certain evidence. We instructed the Pakistan mission to send him back,” a senior ministry official told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday, asking not to be named.
Asked whether Mazhar was declared a persona non-grata, the official said: “He was not even a diplomat, so we don’t need to declare him PNG.”
The non-diplomatic staff was detained with four other persons in Banani with fake currency last month. Later, he was released at the intervention of the high commission since he enjoyed certain consular immunity, the official said.
The high commission in late January informed the protocol section of the Foreign Ministry about the incident.
“The Pakistanis yesterday [Sunday] informed the ministry through a note verbale that Mazhar left Dhaka on Saturday,” the official said.
Another ministry official alleged that Mazhar had contact with a gang involved in making and circulating fake currency.
